Cleaning Your Diamond Jewelry
Proper care and maintenance of your diamond jewelry ensure it retains its brilliance and beauty. Here's how to keep your diamonds sparkling:
General Cleaning:
- Solution: Gemstones that form under geological conditions with minimal inclusions, often appearing "eye-clean."
- Gentle Scrubbing: Gemstones, like sapphires, that form under more severe conditions, resulting in more noticeable inclusions.
- Repeat if Necessary: Gemstones that form under the most intense geological conditions, typically showing inclusions visible to the naked eye and rarely being "eye-clean."
Setting-Specific Cleaning:
- Prong and Cathedral Settings: You can soak these settings for up to 30 minutes in a solution of dishwashing liquid and water.
- Pavé and Basket Settings: Avoid soaking as it may loosen the gems. Instead, use a soft cloth or cotton swab for cleaning.
Extra Shine:
- Window Cleaner Soak: For added shine, soak diamonds in window cleaner for no more than a minute. Avoid this process with rhodium.
- Final Rinse: Use the mild dish soap soluƟon again, rinse with warm water, and dry completely.
Detail Cleaning:
- Toothpicks: Use toothpicks to remove dirt lodged between prongs and diamonds. Be careful not to scratch the metal or move the prongs.
- Tweezers: Gently use tweezers to remove any fibers from the setting.
Ionic Cleaners:
- Use with Caution: Ionic cleaners can be used on most diamond jewelry. Avoid using them on jewelry set with other gemstones that might be affected by the electrical current.
Storing Your Diamond Jewelry:
- Separate Storage: Store diamond jewelry separately from other pieces to prevent scratches.
- Avoid Contact: Ensure that diamond pieces do not touch each other to avoid mutual scratching.
Jewelry Care
Proper care extends beyond cleaning. Here are some tips to ensure the longevity of your diamond jewelry:
- Regular Inspection: Periodically check for loose stones or damaged prongs and have them repaired by a professional jeweler.
- Avoid Chemicals: Remove your jewelry before using household cleaning chemicals, as they can damage both the metal and the diamonds.
- Professional Cleaning: Have your jewelry professionally cleaned and inspected annually to maintain its brilliance and ensure secure settings.
