Pink Sapphires: Elegance and Rarity

A Spectrum of Pinks

Pink sapphires range from very pale pastel pinks to vibrant and intense hot pinks. Their captivating color is due to traces of chromium, with lower concentrations producing pink sapphires and very high concentrations resulting in rubies. When titanium is present in the crystal structure, it gives the sapphire a more purplish pink hue.

Cutting and Sizing

Due to their rarity, pink sapphires that are half a carat or larger are not cut into standard sizes. Each gemstone is carefully cut to retain as much of its original weight as possible, often resulting in mixed cuts that enhance the color's beauty. The most common shapes you'll find are cushions or ovals, designed to showcase the gem's natural allure.

Clarity and Treatment

Eye-clean, untreated pink sapphires are available, though they are rare. Most pink sapphires undergo heat treatment to enhance their clarity and color. Many pink sapphires from Madagascar are subjected to moderate heat treatments to reduce purplish secondary colors. Unlike the high-temperature treatments used for blue and yellow sapphires, Madagascar pink sapphires are heated at lower temperatures (around 400º C) for only a few hours. This gentle process preserves the gemstone's internal characteristics, unlike high-temperature treatments that can significantly alter inclusions.

Global Sources

Madagascar is a notable source of pink sapphires, known for producing stones with exquisite color and quality. The careful and moderate heat treatments applied to these gems enhance their natural beauty without compromising their integrity.
